1. What is artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a technology based on advanced algorithms that makes it possible to imitate human abilities such as logical thinking, learning and planning using mathematics and computer science. It is based on probability models and relies on analyzable data.

Depending on their complexity and use, AI algorithms can process problems largely independently, whereby the solution paths are no longer specified by humans (as is the case with conventional algorithms). Instead, a machine system is trained with large amounts of data for a specific task, i.e. it learns to recognize structures and patterns in data independently through repetition and feedback (“machine learning”). By using AI, very large amounts of data can be analyzed and processed in a short time.

AI-based technologies differ from parametric decision-making processes (parametric planning), which link individual algorithmic building blocks to form process chains in such a way that desired properties can be achieved by changing the parameters of these building blocks. These changes are made through direct human interaction. In contrast to AI-based systems, parametric work ,therefore, does not rely on largely independent problem processing, but on transparency of the input and output data relevant to the result.

Cross-industry areas of application currently include image and speech recognition as well as the optimization of various processes. The novelty and disruptive potential of AI pose challenges in terms of its safe and ethically responsible application. Although there are many similarities, AI currently differs from human intelligence, which also encompasses emotions, creativity, social interaction and consciousness.
